This was because Luhrmanns version transposed the action into the 21st century, with drugs, alcohol, car, firearms and a modern set, so that I could easily identify and relate to it. Zefferilis old-fashioned film is probably more how Shakespeare imagined his play to be, as it is portrayed with a set and costumes from the 16th century. Finally I saw a theatrical production in Warwick which helped Shakespeares words come to life, and gave me a clearer idea of each characters role in the play. Gregory and Sampson In Romeo and Juliet, the opening scene involves two of Capulets servants, Gregory and Sampson, who are armed with swords and bucklers. This straight away gives the impression that they are aggressive and ready for a fight. Both men are chatting together, very crudely, about sex and women. Like typical men they are boasting about their sexual prowess, turning everything into crude jokes, using word-play such as stand, thrust, maidenheads, tool and weapon. They are very sexist referring to women as being the weaker vessels. They think that they can over-power women and that women look up to them as superiors. As Sampson says; Me they shall feel while I am able to stand and tis known I am a pretty piece of flesh. This vulgar and crude talk about sex, is very different to the love Romeo and Juliet share for each other later on in the play. Their love is pure and true, and is much more than just sex! Luhrmann captures this crude boastful talk about sex very well, and it isnt over stated, so you can get the full affect about what they are talking about, shown when one of the characters licks his nipple! The Warwick Arts production was effective too, with Gregory and Sampson using vulgar movements to go with their crude jokes, for example, when Sampson pretended to urinate against the wall! Further into their conversation, Sampson and Gregory boast that they are superior to the Montagues, A dog of that house shall move me to stand: I will take the wall of any man or maid of Montagues, Which means if one of those dogs (Montagues) stirs them into a temper, Gregory and Sampson will stand their ground. This illustrates the characters nature showing that they are rough and ready for a fight. This opening scene in Romeo and Juliet is important, as it is such a contrast to Romeo and Juliets love. The play starts in prose to reflect the casual, informal way the boys speak and the way they behave. This is a scene of violence and comedy. When Romeo enters later on, and when he falls in love with Juliet, Shakespeare changes this style of writing, and uses poetry as it is sophisticated, more formal and emotional. Mercutio Mercutio is one of my favourite characters, because of his larger-than-life personality, and the funny but crude jokes he makes. His name comes from Mercurial which means lively and unpredictable. Throughout the play we can see that his name reflects his personality. When he speaks his Queen Mab speech it is imaginative and Mercutio seems to lose touch with reality. Another character whose name has been chosen to suit his character is Benvolio. His name comes from benevolent which means kind, and the inclination to do good. Benvolio is a Montague, and a good friend of Romeos. These two characters, Mercutio and Benvolio, are both different. Mercutio is very confident, outspoken and extrovert, prepared to fight, whereas Benvolio is a peacemaker who is not interested in fighting or aggression, saying Part fools, put up your swords, you know not what you do. Benvolio is very cautious, unlike Romeo. The Montagues and the Prince can trust his word. Benvolio seems to be used as a contrast to the other characters in order to emphasize their aggression. I think Baz Luhrmanns film is the best production of Romeo and Juliet, because he manages to transpose the action into the 21st century with his use of guns, drugs, cars, and a modern set. However I feel that he portrays Benvolio as too trendy, with an open shirt and baggy trousers, as if he is not kind or good natured. When Benvolio tries to part the Capulets with Gregory and Sampson, he draws out his gun and uses it as a weapon of intimidation, which is not how I picture Benvolio behaving. It seems aggressive and out of character. Mercutio is neither a Capulet nor a Montague, but is close friends with Romeo. He is first introduced to us in Act one scene four, when they are on the street outside Capulets mansion. They are carrying masks and torches, preparing to visit the Capulets party. Mercutio, with his lively personality and crude jokes, tries to cheer Romeo out of his sadness: Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance. He also says, If love be rough with you, be rough with love: Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down, which is typically sexually suggestive. When Romeo refuses to be cheered up, and has no wish to join the dance, Mercutio begins to tell the tale of Queen Mab. Mercutio is funny, and very descriptive, going into the finest detail about the chariot, and the fairies midwife. Mercutio continues his speech with the finest detail saying; She comes in shape no bigger than an agate-stone on the forefinger of an alderman, drawn with a team of little atomi. Her chariot is an empty hazel-nut, and Her wagon spokes made of long spinners legs. From this we can see that Shakespeare develops Mercutios language to emphasize Mercutios lively personality. This detailed description builds up an image in my head of Mercutios perception of Queen Mab: she is a fragile, beautiful, magical fairy. Romeo and his friends, who are listening to Mercutios speech become very disturbed and anxious, and Romeo replies Peace, peace, Mercutio, peace!. They do not want to hear any more disturbing or unpleasant thoughts from Mercutio. Mercutio is next shown, mocking Romeos love for Rosaline, when they are outside the Capulets mansion. He pretends to be a magician saying, Romeo! Humors! Madam! Passion! Lover! Appear thou in the likeness if a sigh. Mercutio also seizes every opportunity to make sexual puns, such as demesnes, stand, spirit, and medlar. At this point Mercutio does not know about Romeos undying love for Juliet, and still thinks Romeo is in love with Rosaline. I found this scene very funny and entertaining at the theatre, where Mercutio was extremely extrovert and larger than life. The most disturbing and upsetting scene is in Verona, in a public place when Mercutio is laughing at Benvolios fears of meeting the Capulets, as Benvolio knows a fight will surely break out, I pray thee, good Mercutio, lets retire: The day is hot, the Capels are abroad, and if we meet we shall not scape a brawl, For now these hot days, is the mad blood stirring. This means that, as the day is hot, and people become very tired and touchy, if any Capulet insults or infuriates any one, a challenge to a fight would not be turned down. When Tybalt enters, Mercutio taunts Tybalt, but Tybalt ignores his insults, because he is seeking Romeo. However Romeo refuses to accept Tybalts challenge to fight, and tries to placate him saying, I do protest I never injured thee, But love thee better than thou canst devise, Till thou shalt know the reason of my love; and so good Capulet , which name I tender as dearly as mine own, be satisfied. The reason why Romeo is against a fight with the Capulets is because he has fallen deeply in love with Juliet and married her. It is already hard enough that they are from different families who are enemies, but becoming engaged in a physical fight would certainly make their relationship even more difficult. Mercutio is angered by Romeos refusal to fight, and challenges Tybalt to a fight himself. Romeo who was against the fight in the first place, tries to make peace. However his intervention is fatal to Mercutio, who becomes mortally wounded when stabbed by Tybalt under Romeos arm. Even when Mercutio is dying he continues to play on words, and he is very comical. He persists with his light-hearted jokes saying, Ay ay, a scratch, scratch, marry, tis enough. Because of this none of his friends realize or believe that he is fatally wounded. In fact they laugh at the act that they think Mercutio is putting on. Mercutio curses both the Montagues and the Capulets saying A plague a both houses! I am sped. Is he gone and hath nothing? In Zefirellis production I feel that this scene was made too comical and funny and light-hearted, as I pictured Mercutio to be aggressive and violent. After Mercutio (and Tybalt) die, there are no funny, comical or crude scenes. This happens so that more emphasis can be directed towards Romeo and Juliet. After Mercutio has said those words a plague a both houses! the whole story seems to go down hill, becoming very much more serious and solemn. At the theatre production, the audience seemed frustrated and upset that Mercutio, the life of the play had died. This increases peoples hatred of Tybalt, the murderer. The Nurse In Act one, Scene three, we are introduced to the Nurse when she is in conversation with Lady Capulet and Juliet. The Nurses position in the Capulet household is rather different to that of a normal servant. She was once Juliets wet nurse, and from then on they have been close, just like a mother daughter relationship. Juliet has taken the place of the daughter that the nurse once had, and everything the Nurse does, she does for Juliet. She has been totally devoted to Juliet like a mother. The Nurse immediately comes across as an enthusiastic, very confident and down to earth character, and quite crude as she says, Now by my maidenhead at twelve year old, I bade her come. What lamb! What, ladybird! God forbid, wheres this girl? What, Juliet!. I was quite surprised that the Nurse was admitting she lost her virginity when she was twelve. I would expect the Nurse to be polite and courteous, as her job is dependent on Lady Capulet. Juliets nurse is very talkative and relates a story from Juliets childhood until she is interrupted. After watching two different versions of Romeo and Juliet on video, which showed the Nurse as being crude and dramatic, I felt that the Nurse was portrayed as too sophisticated and formal in the theatre production to make any of her crude jokes entertaining or funny. Lady Capulet and Juliet are very reserved with each other, not like the Nurse and her now dead husband. Juliet refers to her own mother as madam and Lady Capulet relies greatly on the Nurses support when it comes to making decisions for Juliet as she says; This is the matter. This shows that Lady Capulet is too scared to talk to Juliet in private without the Nurse present as she feels that they are not very close, and the Nurse can deal with the situation better. Shakespeare used language to give his characters different personalities and to make them come to life. He also changed the tone of the play by altering the way different characters spoke. While the word ‘luxury’ is used in daily lives to refer to certain lifestyle, the underlying construct’s definition is consumer and situation specific. If you earn less than 15000 a month, a pair of reebok shoes would be a really big luxury item for you. On the other hand, if you are going to a party with some big-wigs a $100,000 car may not be a luxury. The word luxury originates from the Latin term â€Å"luxus† signifying, â€Å"soft or extravagant living, indulgence, sumptuousness or opulence† The meaning of luxury is extremely subjective and multidimensional in nature. It depends on dimension such as high price, high quality, uniqueness, exclusivity etc. What is a luxury product? In economic terms, luxury products are those who can consistently command and justify a higher price than products with comparable functions and similar quality. In marketing term, luxury products are those who can deliver emotional benefits which is hard to match by comparable products. The luxury sector targets its products and services at consumers on the top-end of the wealth spectrum. These self-selected elite are more or less price insensitive and choose to spend their time and money on objects that are plainly opulence rather than necessities. For these reasons, luxury and prestige brands have for centuries commanded an unwavering and often illogical customer loyalty. Luxury and prestige brands such as Rolex, Louis Vuitton and Cartier represent the highest form of craftsmanship and command a staunch consumer loyalty that is not affected by trends. These brands create and set the seasonal trends and are also capable to pulling all of their consumers with them wherever they go. Premium brands are those brands like Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger that aspire to be luxury and prestige brands but their marketing mix strategies are more attuned to a mass market, albeit a luxury mass market. They are also termed as mass-premium brands or mass-luxury brands. Fashion brands on the other hand are those that address the masses. Strategies for Luxury Marketing There are conventional foundations for ensuring success of a brand and they are listed below in brief : 1. The brand must be â€Å"expansive†. Which means it should be full of innovation opportunities for the marketer and in terms of satisfying the divergent needs of the luxury consumer 2. The brand must tell a story It is this story, of either heritage or performance or other aspects that goes on to build the aura of a brand over time. The story always accentuates the identity of the brand. 3. The brand must be relevant to the consumers’ needs Depending upon the mindset of the luxury class, it is imperative for a brand to satisfy those needs, whether they be for recognition or functional use etc. 4. Chawla’s association: to be the face of the brand, be seen in Dior in the right circles, host events attended by the right people and generally hobnob with the circle that she already moves in. The money details are not clear – people in the circuit and in the luxury industry say its part financial, part goodies. But it might be working. Chawla says, â€Å"Dior has done incredibly well with a consistent rise in sales. It is the most visible brand in India with the highest recall value in terms of marketing strategies implemented. † â€Å"Socialites being signed up for a fashion brand is not new, at least not in the West,† says former fashion editor and luxury specialist Sujata Assomull-Sippy. She mentions Armani’s 19-year-old association with British semi-royal and socialite Lady Helen Taylor that started when he designed her wedding gown in 1992. The association ended in 2009. Taylor, who was also the face for Bulgari, gave a sigh of relief and was glad to give up â€Å"her uniform†. Six years hence, Chawla is nowhere close to hanging up her Dior couture. The ‘Mohan for Gucci’ buzz has engendered new aspirations in the circuit that goes beyond the ‘hostess’ or the grander-sounding luxury consultant tags. â€Å"The socialite is becoming more important in a luxury brand’s marketing strategy as she pulls in the ‘right kind of crowd,† says Priya Sachdev, creative director for TSG International Marketing that has brought brands like YSL, Diane von Furstenberg to India. Nichevertising Brand consultant and strategist Harish Bijoor of Harish Bijoor Consults loftily terms it â€Å"nichevertise vs massvertise†. According to him the luxury brands are not for mass consumption and shouldn’t be mass advertised. The social circuit gives them a fresh channel to reach out to their target audience without any noise. â€Å"The socialite model of marketing targets the guest lists minus the hard sell,† he says. Personal voice- distinct style Every luxury brand needs to develop a marketing strategy that not only helps them achieve their marketing goals, but is also in line with their brand. For example, while it makes sense for Christopher Bailey from Burberry to update the Burberry Facebook page with short videos he makes or music he supports, the same type of strategy might not work for someone like Bentley or Rolex. Bijoor says that for luxury brands, sell is a four-letter word – and not just literally and that’s why they aim at buy. â€Å"Luxury brands like to be bought, not sold,† he says. â€Å"Sell is a top-down strategy which involves an element of ‘shout’ – you asking consumers to consider you. According to the Business Week reports, Individuals who consider their work life balance better than others are likely to work 21% better than those who don’t.Moreover, a study shows people encounter work life conflict have 40% more chances of mood and anxiety disorders, (Kane, 2006); While employees having lower level of this conflic t experience increased job satisfaction. The Evaluation After gathering basic information, now I knew what I was missing and what I got to do. I loved my job, but without my natural energy boosters, I was unhappy and even feeling a bit guilty. My whole time revolved around my work and career, but I couldn’t make up for the very essential part of my life, that is my friends and family.From my newly gained knowledge, I deduced that a balanced approach at my level will be spending quality time with my friends and family that will have a positive physical and psychological impact on me. The SolutionAs I was already a student I opted for the greatest fa cility available today for work life balance concerned employees- Flexible timings, so that I can have more sense of control over my work. Dinner and meals would at no cost be skipped- they provide a quality time for whole family to be together. Also, sleeping schedules must be maintained, so there remain no health problems. Being present is the key word. No drifting away and being in two places at a time. On weekend there would be no computer, no emails, and no emergency calls from work!I could spend quality time with my family. I could contact my friends, go out and have some fun. Lastly, to spend some of my time on myself; a time to relax or do what pleases me. It’s a kind of meditation, hence keeps your mind calm and alert. Giving my study ample time and not burdening myself with more work than I could manage, was also essential. Conclusion The set of habits I formed as a solution for my work life problem, not only supports but emphasizes a sound balance between work and life activities.Back then I couldn’t see past my work; it still plays a principle part in my life, though it’s not my one and only concern anymore. Raid on Deerfield in Queen Anne's War The Raid on Deerfield took place February 29, 1704, during Queen Annes War (1702-1713). Located in western Massachusetts, Deerfield was targeted by Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouvilles French and Native American forces in early 1704. The attack was typical of the small-unit actions that frequently occurred along the colonial frontier and saw the inhabitants and local militia attempt to defend the settlement with mixed results. In the fighting, the attackers killed and captured a significant number of settlers. The raid gained lasting fame when one of the captives, Reverend John Williams, published an account of his experiences in 1707. Built on land taken from the Pocomtuc tribe, the English residents in the new village existed on the fringe of the New England settlements and were relatively isolated. As a result, Deerfield was targeted by Native American forces during the early days of King Philips War in 1675. Following a colonial defeat at the Battle of Bloody Brook on September 12, the village was evacuated. With successful conclusion of the conflict the next year, Deerfield was reoccupied. Despite additional English conflicts with the Native Americans and French, Deerfield passed the remainder of the 17th century in relative peace. This came to an end shortly after the turn of the century and the beginning of Queen Annes War. Pitting the French, Spanish, and allied Native Americans against the English and their Native American allies, the conflict was the North American extension of the War of the Spanish Succession. Unlike in Europe where the war saw leaders like the Duke of Marlborough fight large battles such as Blenheim and Ramillies, fighting on the New England frontier was characterized by raids and small unit actions. These began in earnest in mid-1703 as the French and their allies began attacking towns in present-day southern Maine. As the summer progressed, colonial authorities began to receive reports of possible French raids into the Connecticut Valley. In response to these and the earlier attacks, Deerfield worked to improve its defenses and enlarged the palisade around the village. Planning the Attack Having completed the raids against southern Maine, the French began turning their attention to the Connecticut Valley late in 1703. Assembling a force of Native Americans and French troops at Chambly, command was given to Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville. Though a veteran of previous raids, the strike against Deerfield was de Rouvilles first major independent operation. Departing, the combined force numbered around 250 men. Moving south, de Rouville added another thirty to forty Pennacook warriors to his command. Word of de Rouvilles departure from Chambly soon spread through the region. Alerted to the French advance, New Yorks Indian agent, Pieter Schuyler, quickly notified the governors of Connecticut and Massachusetts, Fitz-John Winthrop and Joseph Dudley. Concerned about the safety of Deerfield, Dudley dispatched a force of twenty militia to the town. These men arrived on February 24, 1704. de Rouville Strikes Moving through the frozen wilderness, de Rouvilles command left bulk of their supplies approximately thirty miles north of Deerfield before establishing a camp closer to the village on February 28. As the French and Native Americans scouted the village, its inhabitants prepared for the night. Due to the pending threat of attack, all of the residents were residing within the protection of the palisade. This brought Deerfields total population, including the militia reinforcements, to 291 people. Assessing the towns defenses, de Rouvilles men noticed that the snow had drifted against the palisade allowing for the raiders to easily scale it. Pressing forward shortly before dawn, a group of raiders crossed over the palisade before moving to open the towns north gate. Swarming into Deerfield, the French and Native Americans began attacking houses and buildings. As the inhabitants had been taken by surprise, fighting degenerated into a series of individual battles as the residents struggled to defend their homes. With the enemy swarming through the streets, John Sheldon was able to climb over the palisade and rushed to Hadley, MA to raise the alarm. Blood in the Snow One of the first houses to fall was that of Reverend John Williams. Though members of his family were killed, he was taken prisoner. Making progress through the village, de Rouvilles men gathered prisoners outside the palisade before looting and burning many of the houses. While many houses were overrun, some, such as that of Benoni Stebbins, successfully held out against the onslaught. With fighting winding down, some of the French and Native Americans began withdrawing north. Those who remained retreated when a force of around thirty militia from Hadley and Hatfield arrived on the scene. These men were joined by around twenty survivors from Deerfield. Chasing the remaining raiders from the town, they began pursuing de Rouvilles column. This proved a poor decision as the French and Native Americans turned and set an ambush. Striking the advancing militia, they killed nine and wounded several more. Bloodied, the militia retreated to Deerfield. As word of the attack spread, additional colonial forces converged on the town and by the next day over 250 militia were present. Assessing the situation, it was determined that a pursuit of the enemy was not feasible. Leaving a garrison at Deerfield, the remainder of the militia departed. Aftermath In the raid on Deerfield, de Rouvilles forces suffered between 10 and 40 casualties while the towns residents incurred 56 killed, including 9 women and 25 children, and 109 captured. Of those taken prisoner, only 89 survived the march north to Canada. Over the next two years, many of the captives were freed after extensive negotiations. Others elected to remain in Canada or had become assimilated into the Native American cultures of their captors. In retaliation for the raid on Deerfield, Dudley organized strikes north into present-day New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. In sending forces north, he also hoped to capture prisoners who could be exchanged for Deerfields residents. Fighting continued until the wars end in 1713. As in the past, the peace proved brief and combat resumed three decades later with King Georges War/War of Jenkins Ear. The French threat to the frontier remained until the British conquest of Canada during the French Indian War.

How Aschenbach and Meursault in Death in Venice and The Stranger respectively, are driven by mind initially then change to being driven by the heart as the result of a key event In both The Stranger and Death in Venice, the characters change as the book progresses. There is mainly one action that sparks this drastic change. In The Stranger, this action is the murder of Raymond’s mistress’ brother, and in Death in Venice this critical moment occurs when Aschenbach has the sudden urge to travel. Aschenbach and Meursault are both characters that move from one extreme to the other. They begin as characters who make decisions based solely on what their mind tells them. As the novel develops, these characters move to the other extreme, which is making decisions based solely on what their heart tells them. This transition from extreme logical thinking to extreme emotional thinking is what leads to the downfall of both Aschenbach and Meursault. As the novel begins, Thomas Mann introduces Aschenbach as a fairly likable German writer. Initially the reader sees Aschenbach as a normal character anyone can relate to. He lives a very stable life, and has never traveled before. Aschenbach is a character who is extremely involved in his work and one who organizes his entire life based on how he can best achieve quality in his work. At this point in the novel Aschenbach makes all his decisions using his mind rather than his heart. While taking a stroll, Aschenbach sees a man with red hair as well as long teeth. It is this man that pushes his mind in to traveling. Aschenbach begins to change as soon as he sets his mind to travel. In his daydream regarding his adventure he envisions a â€Å"†¦ landscape, a tropical swampy region under a vapor-laden sky, damp, luxuriant and uncanny; it was like the portrait of a primitive world of islands morasses and slit-laden rivers† (pg 3, Mann). The symbol of Aschenbach’s departure on this journey is the sign of the beginning of his decline. It is from this point on that Aschenbach transforms from being a normal man who makes logical decisions with is brain, to one that makes decisions with his heart. As Aschenbach’s journey progresses, he notices many men with red hair and long white teeth like the one that inspired him to travel. This shows the constant rapid declining of Aschenbach. His first sight of Tadzio in the hotel marks the beginning of the extreme heart-driven Aschenbach. His description of Tadzio clearly portrays his obsession. â€Å"With astonishment Aschenbach observed that the boy was perfectly beautiful. His face, pale and charmingly secretive with the honey-colored hair curling around it, with its straight-sloping nose, its lovely mouth and its expression of sweet and divine earnestness recalled Greek statues of the noblest period, and, along with its extremely pure perfection of form, it was of such unique personal charm that the onlooker thought he had never come across anything so felicitous either in nature or in art† (pg 20, Mann). Once Aschenbach begins to follow Tadzio’s every step, the reader notices that Aschenbach is becoming more and more indulged in Tadzio’s life rather than his own. â€Å"His head and his heart were drunk, and his steps followed the dictates of that dark god whose pleasure it is to trample man’s reason and dignity underfoot†. Even when Aschenbach learns of an epidemic, he realizes that if he dies along with Tadzio, they will be able to meet in heaven. Aschenbach loses total control of his mind and gives in to Venice, a â€Å"city, half fairy tale and half tourist trap, in whose insalubrious air the arts once rankly and voluptuously blossomed, where composers have been inspired to lulling tones of somniferous eroticism. † Even when given the opportunity to leave Venice and escape cholera, his love for Tadzio weighs him down. Aschenbach then has fantasies about everyone else dying, and him being left alone with Tadzio. Now it can be clearly seen that Aschenbach’s passion is coming directly from the heart, and no thinking is being done on his part. This extreme obsession from Aschenbach’s heart immediately leads to his downfall. He dies in his chair, and it is hours before anyone notices.
